During the Dark Ages all of the major settlements, except for Athens, were abandoned and the population numbers reduced dramatically. Within 300 years the Greeks moved around in small groups, living wherever their livestock was fine and they had enough food. They left behind no clues as to why and how they were living which means that they weren't educated. Later in the Dark Ages the Greeks relearned how to write and read. But instead of using the Linear B script they used the way of the Phoenicians. The Phoenicians introduced vowels as letters. The Greek way of writing introduced the base of the English alphabet today.
Life was hard for the Greeks, but one good thing happened from the Dark Ages. The Mycenaean government, a strict class of hierarchy and hereditary, was forgotten and this was the reason of the rise of democracy in the 5th century BC Athens. The first Olympics also took place during the Dark Ages in 776 and the creation of the Odyssey.
