Prometheus and Epimetheus were spared from imprisonment in Tartarus because they did not fight with their Titan brothers against the Olympians. Instead, they were given the task of creating men. Prometheus shaped men out of clay and Athena breathed life into them. Epimetheus was assigned to give men their strengths, like cunning and swiftness. Unfortunately, by the time Prometheus got the men to his brother, all of the good qualities were given to other living creatures. So Prometheus gave men the ability to stand like Gods and gave them fire.
Prometheus loved man more than Olympians, the ones who banished most of his brothers. So when Zeus said that humans must present one part of the animal they sacrifice to the gods, Prometheus decided to trick him. He wrapped bones in juicy fat and hid the good meat in a hide. Prometheus told Zeus to pick one of the piles. Obviously he chose the bones wrapped in juicy fat. When Zeus realized that he was tricked he took fire away from man. But Prometheus lighted a torch from the Sun and gave it to the humans. Furious that Prometheus had stolen fire from the gods and gave it to humans, Zeus decided to punish Prometheus and his humans.
When Prometheus and his brother were creating humans, they created only men no women. So to punish men he asked his son Hephaestus to create a mortal with stunning beauty. She was blessed with many gifts. A final gift was a jar, which she was prohibited to open. She was sent down to Prometheus’s brother.
Prometheus warned his brother not to take gifts from Zeus but Pandora’s beauty was too great. Eventually Pandora couldn’t hold in her curiosity any longer so she opened the jar. Out flew plagues, diseases, sorrows and misfortunes. The bottom of the jar held one good thing, hope.
Zeus was mad at Prometheus for three things: being tricked on sacrifices, stealing fire for man and for not telling him which of his children will dethrone him. Zeus had his servants Violence and Force take Prometheus to the Caucasus Mountains and chain him there with unbreakable chains. He was tormented day and night by a giant eagle that tore at his liver. Zeus gave Prometheus two options: One was to tell the name of the mother of this child that would dethrone him or another was that an immortal must agree to die for him and a mortal must kill the eagle and break the chains. So Chiron the Centaur agreed to die for him and Hercules killed the eagle and broke the chains.
